I was on a conference call about a year ago through Spirit Rock Meditation Center with Congressman Tim Ryan. He was speaking of the importance of mindfulness and meditation practice in his own life and conviction of the need for it in public schools. With the recent outbreak in the media of stories about consequences of bullying, this campaign is able to use that frame to promote support. He is the most overt advocate of mindfulness in the US government. He has promoted the practice of mindfulness in the military and schools and now he is expanding his campaign with the Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Act. The proposed act, co-sponsored by Congressman Dave Loebsack, Congressman Tom Petri and Congressman Matt Cartwright, amends the Elementary Education and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to now permit funding for faculty training for social and emotional learning program.
